    The one consolation is that if you are good and stick to your discipline, you will be more competitive than others.  So long as you are more competitive, when a job becomes available you will be more likely to get it.  

    What gets me is that grad students can increasingly do underpaid teaching (or other) jobs under the guise of "training."  If they don't, they'll never get the experience they need; but if they do, then they undercut the existing wage system.  Unionized labor is the only way to hold back this tide, because only the unions have enough interest in the details of wage regulation and enough power to hold firm on them.
