    We have been cutting off limbs to make the budgets balance.

    If these measures are not enacted, Brown and the Legislature will have no choice but to recommend further cuts to schools. It's just a fact.

    This will cost families money directly in the next school year, as they are expected to buy more supplies, provide more child care, provide more transportation, do more fundraising, and pay more for various extracurricular activities.

    This will cost families money indirectly going forward, as they pay more for tutors, more for books (no more libraries), more for support services, as their kids struggle more academically.

    This will cost the state money in the long run, as these kids will be less prepared for college, less likely to start creative new businesses, less prepared to be part of the world's most creative workforce, and they'll make less money in their lifetime.
