    were Dems? I wonder if a lot of the Obama supporters who stayed home or voted GOP were independents, or maybe swing voters, who went for Obama, but then went for the GOP in 2010, because of the economy.

      iirc, the groups whose turnout dropped the most from 2008 to 2010 were young voters, Latinos and bottom quintile income voters. I think we're probably looking at a mix of dem-leaning unaffiliated types and democrats. I don't think the Dem base stayed home, since being part of the "base" means voting reliably.

      However, I can tell ya that the base was not as highly energized as it had been.
