...he votes against a politician that favors a hike in a use/sales tax, or the creation of one.

In 1993, many Dems voted for the BTU tax (the Senate wisely didn't even vote on it).  In 1994, many of those Dems lost.

In 2009, Corzine lost, in part b/c he increased the sales tax.

In 2010, the IL Governor won by 0.5% points a state that President Obama had won by 24% points.  Why?  Because he promised to increased the income tax by 50% (he ended up increasing it by 67%, on every household).

Point is, Dems shouldn't be that surprised if the working and middle-class abandon pols that increase regressive taxes.

One decade ago, as the nation thrived, very few took umbrage to yearly tax increases.  But after a year of median wage stagnation, every penny increase in the sales tax is a penny less in after-tax wages.

That's what many Dems don't get.

The willingness of Democrats to capitulate on that is what has led to the increases in regressive taxes.  (Republicans LOVE to increase regressive taxes -- their favorite is to increase "fees", where every person pays the same amount in cash, whether they have the money or not.)

Why would anyone with a rock solid health care plan sign onto a revision of the entire system if there was even the slightest shred of chance that their own plan might be negatively affected?  Use some media clout to sow the seeds of doubt and it's done for.

Rub the health care and pension benefits of public sector employees in the faces of private sector employees without and gin up enough hatred to strip the public sector employees of benefits.  Meanwhile the private sector workers see nada for improvement.

Couple a massive tax cut for the rich with a meager tax cut for the working class.  Then sit back and laugh as the working class sell out their schools, public services, social safety nets, etc.  Meanwhile, Charlie Sheen and Rush Limbaugh sit safely in their exclusive communities with top tier public schools or sent their kids to $20,000+ a year private schools.
