library ... the downtown and east-side branches serve a population with even less access to the Internet and home PCs. At the east-side branch, there are classes for adults in how to use the computers, too.

    I love libraries.

naturally our City Council is trying to find a way to shut down all but the Southwest branch (in the toniest part of town, where the rental on a former B&N store is over $10,000 monthly. Why is it there? Six years ago the building the City had built in the 1970s on the shore of a lake developed a leak. The City chose to defer maintenance for money-saving reasons. Year before last the mold got so bad in the building the insurance inspectors condemned it; it had to be bulldozed. All the books went into storage for several months, until this space became "available" -- in a City bigwig's strip mall) because "it's too expensive to keep the buildings open, secure, staffed, heated, air-conditioned, and lighted."

Guess how many Democrats are on our city council.
