    is not really a national election.  It's 50 elections, and appealing to the base on wedge issues has been successful in the past.  Example is the anti-gay legislation introduced in Ohio in 2004.  Brought out the base and Bush took Ohio.

      You've noticed that many prominent GOPers have either issued tepid statements on Obama's DOMA decision or ignored it all together. Why? Because outside of the GOP base, nobody cares anymore.

      Gay bashing was last effective in 2004, like you said. Since then, it's falling out of favor. It doesn't work as a wedge issue anymore.
