    Whenever I see the "who needs libraries- we have the internet" attitude, I always respond that the vast majority of public libraries are not corporations or sponsored by corporations. Information providers on the internet can't make that claim. And just like corporately-owned newspapers, every piece of information provided on the internet has to be scrutinized for the subtle bias in favor of the one who's paying the piper.
    I think that's why certain republicans/tea partiers hate public libraries-- it's an extension of the nihilistic anti-community I-got-mine-screw-you attitude engendered by the corporate mindset.

      the public library IS the Internet.

      And even if you do have Internet at home, the public library can be the provider of last resort when the house connection is down and you need to do something online right now.

      Even when the local fast food places start having free wifi, you've still got to have a laptop of your own to access it. That's usually not an issue at a library.

      Hoping and praying that the empty chairs and empty tables in th4e Middle East and Northern Africa when all is said and done are as few as possible.
