We in trenches of new music, or what some back in school called "contemptible music", salute you.

What other kind of material do you do? Any CDs, you tube links, etc. you would like to let us know about?

What kind of soprano are you anyway, Kelley? What is your favorite material to sing, either in an ensemble or as a soloist? My mom was a voice teacher, nad, in her day, a lyric soprano. I grew up with this stuff, and I love it, but, sadly, was blessed with the voice of a low flying bass frog.

I have some reluctance about posting specifically about my performances, especially without checking first with directors of the various organizations I belong to...  It's odd to be offering up criticisms of performances I have actually participated in, so I have to be careful about that.  I will check on it.

There is one link I'll provide to a webcast since it's up anyway on wnyc.org: WNYC Greene Space Performance

This was part of the inauguration of the Jerome L. Greene performing space at WNYC.  Not the best or most forgiving acoustics, but whatever.  It's cool to have the audience practically sitting in your lap.  "The Little Match Girl" by David Lang is truly affecting.  We did it several days later in a church where the sound rolled around nicely and it really rocked.  It's such a moving piece!

I'm a lyric soprano of the high variety.  I like to sing mostly everything.  I just like to sing period.  But JS Bach especially.

My first breakthrough, long ago, was about a month after quitting it.  My Hungarian teacher (Mr. Intratur) had told me that listening to me playing was "like... poundting... tzee... nailssss... indto... my... headttttt...." complete with broad, synchronized hand motions.

And then, one summer day -- as I was pushing a gas-powered lawnmower trying to make another 25 cents to go towards buying a camera -- Vivaldi came over and sat down inside my brain.  His Four Seasons, or maybe just one of them. I decided that I had to return (although without Mr. Intratur this time).

Forty years later I still love the instrument. Can't get enough of it.

When I practice, it's Bach, or I'll pick out a few measures of some blockbuster and tell myself its just an exercise.  When I listen, it centers on chamber (Brahms, Dvorak, Beethoven) or v-p sonatas (anything French).  When I do playback in my head, it's Heifetz heavies or Kreisler showpieces.  These days there are so many great violinists out there.

Far and away my favorite composer.  I sing Bach arias when I'm feeling puny, and he makes me feel healthy almost immediately.

I have always liked his music, but it is only in the last year that I realize how much of modern Western music (particularly pop music) is born of Bach.

My brother and I are going to eastern Germany this summer, and I will make my first visit to Leipzig.  We will of course visit all things Bach, and we have tickets for two Mahler concerts at the Gewandhaus.  Can't wait.
