about how a democracy operates, and specifically about how our American constitutional democracy operates. You want to see how one-man rule works, look to Egypt and Libya. Personally, I prefer our system, flawed though it may be, where one man does not dictate to either the legislative or the judicial branches.

The diarist obviously has a different view.

about how the American constitutional democracy works.

Hint: the President appoints the head of the DOJ.  When things are WORKING, the DOJ prosecutes criminals.

We know from the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission that there were criminal frauds at the heart of the causes of the financial crisis.

The DOJ is not prosecuting anyone for any of them.

The President can order the head of the DOJ to read the FCIC report and start prosecutions. If Eric Holder doesn't want to, the President can sack him and hire someone who will do their job.

The diarist was obviously referring to the DoJ, which IS part of the executive and where justice begins. Holding criminals accountable is the executive's job.

Now that we have a president who rejects the theory of the unitary executive, we have people crying for the fleshpots of Egypt again. I, for one, had more than enough of W. Now we have a president who thinks process is important. Process is the essence of democracy.

Deciding who is a criminal is not the president's job. It is correct that it is the job of the executive branch of government, but the president should not personally specify who to prosecute.
