    ...what I skimmed.  As with the analysis of interest groups in The Israel Lobby, I appreciate the refusal to play the reductionist and attribute this to a single factor.  

     I think that the establishment and the volunteer military are the primary culprits.  On the other hand, it is also possible to imagine universal service where only a small percentage of those serving saw combat; I am not sure that the adoption of a draft would necessarily end the American love affair with military intervention.  I'm not sure that any nation consuming such a large percentage of the world's energy and resources will ever stop playing the role that we play, truth be told.
