• ##### That is one crappy chart(6+ / 0-)

If I read this right, the red Forbes 400 line, with values from \$403 million to \$3.063 billion, is plotted at the same scale but with different units as the household net worth numbers, which range from \$88,000 to \$9.6 million. So, you get a goofy graph where \$403,000,000 for the Forbes 400 is in the same position on the Y axis as about \$2,000,000 for household net worth.

Graphically, the person worth \$3.063 billion looks like they have about 3x as much as the person with \$9.6 million. Whereas, the real difference is 340x. Likewise, the person with \$1,100,000 looks like the have almost the same as someone with \$90,000 – a difference of 11x.

Confusing, and it doesn’t even tell the story at all.

Of course, I can see why such a bad graph came to be. To perceptibly express the difference between the average Forbes 400 individual and avg. household in the bottom 90% in consistent units you can’t do it in the chart pictured. Instead of being 3 inches tall, it would have to be 50 feet tall. You need a 20,000% bigger chart.

I've seen that chart before and hadn't paid attention to the second scale on the right. That is so confusing! There has to be a way to display this properly though.
