  •  Perhaps to some extent but the knowledge of (9+ / 0-)

a master plumber, electrician or builder is quite on a par with a college degree; competency and expertise should be rewarded however acquired. And folks who are willing to give a fair day's work should get a living wage, even if that means the man at the top can't garner 1,000 times what his secretary earns.

    •  Good point (5+ / 0-)

No one can take the place of a good plumber when your pipes are broken.

I did just a couple hours ago but only have 1 year of college....fixed the doors in about 5...I'll get to the rest of the truck when my back heals up from this minor repair....

Next is the new steering column...that should take about a half hour......

          in that kind of education!

Besides look at all the money you didn't have to make by fixing it yourself.

A talent not every one has.

People with PhD's just confuse me, cause they are always looking for that 'both sides'. As in that is fair, but on the other hand it isn't. :-)

my back one too many times...

I just sold my fav truck and a honda because the repairs required strength I don't have any more....Bought this old 85 f150 because it needed a lot so it was cheap,  but all things I can still physically do given time in between.....

If I couldn't fix my own, I couldn't afford to drive.

I honestly don't know how people afford it though as a skilled trade, it's honestly worth every penny we charge....

I had tons of specialized schooling plus passed the ASE tests and read every trade journal and technical source I could get my hands on forever......

yet after only a few years out of the biz, I have to research all new problems as the technology advances so fast....

we had to work on hundreds of different systems that changed yearly and we had to perform....Doctors and Lawyers get to "practice"................

has a 2001 Chevy Silverado extended cab that has 335,000 miles on it. He is a carpenter so he needs a truck to work. The cost of these things is crazy, but if you take care em, change the oil rotate the tires, and change the oil filter they last for a long time.

He has been stressing on buying a new used truck and wants the same good engine. He settled for a 2003 Silverado same engine, a little fancier bells and whistles with the off road enhancements. It was 14,ooo thou!!!! He is freaking out that his new used truck won't get as good of gas mileage as the old truck. I say it should be about the same.

Sorry about your back. I hope you f150 purrs like a kitten soon.

I can't believe how much a truck costs these days!!!! But they have a 5 year warranty and get a lot more mileage than the old ones used to. Plus the price of gas is scary.... but you have to have a truck to work. You have to buy gas to get there. That's all there is to it!

Yeah the new trucks are lots of computer stuff, so that is challenging too. I can't even figure out how to roll up the window!

it's a different form of knowledge. very valid, and worthy of good pay and working conditions, but a different sort of knowledge than that gained through higher ed. (or at least, what one ought to gain from higher ed.).

one is specialist, one is generalist. one abstract, one applied. both needed.
