Like a commenter wrote above (I couldn't find the exact comment in the few moments of re-skimming the diary), in my time of lurking I too noticed members that were more popular and had a greater impact on the discussions generated at DK - mostly by their strong writing, predominantly single topic focus, and consistent time on the Rec List.

Combine the above with my personal philosophy that a rookie has to earn his or her dues before being able to lead, and you end up with your first option - I signed up to be able to comment to add my voice.

As I become more known in the community and figured out what I could be an "expert" on to help educate this community (life sciences and science policy), I started writing diaries to influence the conversation.  I've still only been on the Rec List once (a diary about Obama reaching 2 million donations during election season, no less), but they have been getting more and more visits lately (I had a diary on Community Spotlight a few weeks ago!  Plus I've had one or two rescued in the old format).

A theme I notice is that the most impacting members tend to consistently write about a single topic, as I mentioned above.  So I'm trying to model that and write as much as I can.  My fav thing about DK4 is definitely the Groups feature, because I think it makes pooling experts together a lot more possible.
