  •  The mainstream definition of (13+ / 0-)

"identity politics" has been promoted by conservatives, and, weirdly, swallowed whole by a raft of self-proclaimed class activists.

The Combahee Collective recognized that identity shapes a person's politics, and they emphasized the need to create coalitions and find commonalities across different oppressions.

But the conservatives, and a certain sect of regressive Marxists, have decided that "identity politics" describes the banding together of groups of people based only on one determining factor (race, ability, sexual identitification, gender, etc.). This is something that takes place only in the white mind, and is evident in the white hysteria bolstering the ridiculous claim that black people voted for Obama only because he was black. In short, it's a fear that oppressed folks will gang up against them. Oddly enough, the Marxists who shriek about this don't think it's a problem if people identify only the basis of class -- in fact, they encourage this.

So when you use the term, you can think about which definition you want to adopt. The orginal and progressive meaning? Or the twisted and fearful revision of the frightened white folks?
