  •  As an Arab American woman (14+ / 0-)

working to combat Islamophobia and racism, I have encountered these attitudes many times.

Our organization provides leadership training to the young women of color who show committed interest to our work.  It has been wonderful to see young Arab and Muslim women who have never been organizers before thrive and take on leadership roles.

Your story reminds me of speaking out against the first Iraq war on a panel of white feminists opposed to the war.  One of the young women said that we should oppose the war because we were defending Saudi Arabia, a country "filled with misogynists that did not allow women to drive".  She never once mentioned the suffering that Iraqis would suffer, and it was clear to me that to this feminist, Arabs were less than human and Arab women were not agents of their own free will.

Jawaher Abu Rahme, rest in peace. The struggle for freedom will continue.
