  •  I have a question for white feminists (6+ / 0-)

do you want to be equal to Black or Mexican Men?

I can guarantee you the answer is no.

Its not about being equal to men... its about being equal to WHITE men.

And white feminists do not have to bear the burden of   race.  Its accepted in society that "white" is normal and not being white is not normal.

So Black women and Indigenous women (including Mexican women) have to deal with a double burden that I don't  have to.  And that is NEVER addressed by white feminists.  At the most its white feminists talking DOWN to them.

    •  and another thing (0+ / 0-)

I do not like the label women of colour.

Its meant to separate white females from  the "others".  White is normal, the others are not.

      •  What label would you suggest? (0+ / 0-)

Highlighting difference or variety is not automatically negative. I don't like to be conflated with straight people, even though straight is considered "normal" and gay is not.

The problem is not respecting or noticing difference or variation. In fact, the attempted erasure of difference is its own form of bigotry because it suggests there's something wrong with said difference.

    •  Actually, it is addressed by white feminists, (12+ / 0-)

but not the ones who get into the mainstream press.  There's always been a segment of the feminist movement that's been dedicated to anti-racism, and has included both feminists of color and white women. Mainstream white feminists have been just as complicit in erasing this history as most other white folks, though.  I'd like to spend time recovering those foremothers, because that, in my mind, is what feminism should stand for -- women standing shoulder to shoulder, across race, class, gender, etc. barriers.

    •  Be careful. (0+ / 0-)

There are all manner of "double burdens." There are lesbian white feminists. It's accepted in society that being straight is "normal."  There are transsexual white feminists. There are white feminists who have crawled out of a level of poverty you could not conceive of. White feminists are not a monolith.

It's not true that these issues are NEVER addressed by white feminists. There are few modern successful white feminists who get away with not addressing these multiple subjectivities. They need more addressing. But kindly don't dismiss entire groups of people when you haven't met them all.
