An H1B visa holder working at a public school district was lucky to have a research job - doing something that I was qualified to do, but I was not willing to work in the situation she was glad to accept. No benefits (vacation, health benefits, disability, retirement), no permanent employment, no office.

I'd have done the job as a consultant, to have greater flexibility wrt time and work location, since I didn't think the job responsibilities would require a full time position, but they couldn't hire me, an American citizen on the same terms as the H1B worker.

I was lucky not to have taken it and found a much better job elsewhere. There I tried to hire an H!B visa holder to fill a job for which I had not been able to find a qualified candidate. The H1B worker would have been excellent, but my employer followed the H1B rules to the letter.
