Thanks for writing this!  I know racism in the feminist movement has been a longstanding problem, and it's nice to hear you describe so clearly how it looks and plays out.

I've seen the same thing happen with regard to other forms of privilege and oppression.  I ran a small nonprofit for a few years... a center for queer youth.  You should have heard the adults on the Board of Directors shoot down ideas for sharing decision-making power with the youth themselves.  But God forbid anyone suggest they weren't 110% wonderful people doing everything right just by serving on the Board.  Needless to say, they also had problems around race, gender, class, and so on.

This created a huge tension within the organization.  The staff, including me, considered that an organization dedicated to queer youth empowerment wasn't living its mission if youth were excluded from high level decision-making as a matter of policy.  This was not the only organization I know of, where the professional staff were trained in anti-oppression, while Board members were recruited for their prominence, skill sets, and money even if they were ignorant about oppression.  The clash in values and culture becomes especially apparent at times of crossroads or crisis.  Not a good scene, and it eventually caused big problems.  I was "burned a lot, but learned a lot," as Ella would say.
