  •  What did they make at companies other than Google? (4+ / 0-)

Google has long made it a policy to at least try to "do well by doing good," and they have frequently made decisions that harm their business interests because the actions would conflict with ethical priorities (see: withdrawing from Mainland China).  Maybe it's that way across-the-board, I don't know, but I wouldn't be surprised to see that Google does things differently.

I am in an industry that employs a TON of H1Bs.  There is absolutely zero talk among people who actually work as software engineers about H1Bs depressing salaries.  Do you have an actual example of this happening?  Or is it some boogeyman that you just believe because it sounds scary?

      •  I have no boogeymen because I asked a serious (0+ / 0-)

question.  Identifying one company may mean that the statistics are cherry-picked - or it may just be because that was the information available at hand.  I was hoping to learn more, not to be attacked here.

among US born STEM employees about the downward pressure of H1B employees on salaries... but you, being a hiring manager, just are not included in those conversations.

I have worked as an IT consultant for several companies that had no problem replacing a US born and educated engineer they were paying $75/hr W2 with one from China or Pakistan or India who they will pay 45-50/hr because they know that what they bill the client will not change and that 25-30/hr they are no longer paying out to the consultant becomes pure profit.

While every company does not operate in such a way there are more than a few that will.

How it creates a downward pressure on salaries is because they can play hardball with a prospective employee on how much they will pay them because they can find someone who will work cheaper. The reason there is no great outcry is because when you are talking mid-level and senior IT and engineering positions, the floor is going to be 75 or 80k per annum... but if you are a senior IT engineer with 15+ years of experience and an advanced degree 75-80k is probably a significant pay cut from what you have been making and significantly lower than what you are asking.

Fear doesn't just breed incomprehension. It also breeds a spiteful, resentful hate of anyone and everyone who is in any way different from you.
