of the right, they like the feeling of power from discriminating against people and they like it a lot.

To withhold things from other people that they themselves have gives them a reason for living.   That is what they like about discrimination, the fact that they can and it feeds their egos and self esteem.

... cause everybody's gotta have somebody to look down on
Who they can feel better than at any time they please
Someone doin' somethin' dirty decent folks can frown on
If you can't find nobody else, then help yourself to me

Others laugh at straights who laugh at
      Freaks who laugh at squares

      Some folks hate the whites
Who hate the blacks who hate the klan
Most of us hate anything that
      We don't understand

to 'look down on people' in the sense of disagreeing with everything they believe and wanting a world run on principles diametrically opposed to their beliefs.

It is another thing to try to take away their rights to their beliefs and their political rights to try to sway others, and to take away their rights to act so long as those acts aren't harming others.   To make same sex marriages illegal, to criminalize homosexual acts, is to discriminate.   To despise the self righteous prigs who do those things, that is the kind of looking down on people I can live with.

is fundamentally American ... but Republicans seem to have forgotten that, and not for the first time.
