  •  Silver lining (7+ / 0-)

I'm sure this bill will die in the senate... but if funding is cut as part of a budget agreement, maybe it will in the long run give NPR more freedom to report on stories that it currently avoids, help them stand up a little more to the need to report "both sides" when there are obvious false equivalences, and allow them to do more of the investigative in-depth reporting that made them so great to listen to in the late 70's and early 80's.

Also they can give Mara Liasson and Cokie Roberts pink slips and not have to worry about Congressional outrage.

but  on reflection, it seems like it'll make them more dependent on corporation funds. I can see the kochs and their ilk lined up to give donations (and influence their journalism) already.

However, I'd consider it a plus if it resulted in just your last paragraph.

money now comes from corporations, the same ones that run the government so in some ways they are more bound in by the corporate mentality of america.  however, they are free really to cover ... oh never mind, I can't think of anything they could cover and not feel the whip of self-censorship.

When we say no more big corporate sponsorship (perhaps put a number of size from buisness donations, like nothing from the fortune 500 or something,  maybe we'll get some unbiased news from NPR. ) Meanwhile I'll enjoy CAR TALK and other silly programs they do... news, well just forget it.

I get my news from other sources but not from Corporate-biased NPR.

    •  Looking at NPR's funding sources and mechanics, (3+ / 0-)

it appears that they don't receive federal money directly, but get dollars via grants from the Education and Commerce agencies...

NPR's revenue comes primarily from fees paid by our member stations, contributions from corporate sponsors, institutional foundation grants, gifts from major donors, and fees paid by users of The Public Radio Satellite System. While NPR does not receive any direct federal funding, it does receive a small number of competitive grants from CPB and federal agencies like the Department of Education and the Department of Commerce. This funding amounts to approximately 2% of NPR’s overall revenues. The largest share of NPR's revenue comes from program fees and station dues paid by member stations that broadcast NPR programs.

So I guess Boneher's "emergency" is figuring out how to tell the Department of Education and Department of Commerce how to spend their own budgets without actually classifying NPR as an outfit actively aiding and abetting a foreign terrorist organization.

      Good luck with that, "Pumpkin."

Teabaggers that despite two failures, the regulars are serious about the culture warfare issues the Teabaggers brought with them, by giving them one. The emergency may be a power fight involving Cantor and Boney.

defend them. MediaMatters had a piece about how they enabled Okeefe - not mentioning the pimp outfit was never worn on video, etc. You lie with dogs you get fleas.

They spent their time sucking up to neocons and Sensible Liberals - so they should ask them for help.
