  •  The war on drugs is MUCH longer than 50 years (5+ / 0-)

I cannot recommend a diary claiming the war on drugs is 50 years old today because it is an egregious factual error. In fact, depending on whom you agree w/ the war on drugs is either over 100 years in the U.S. or just approaching its 100th anniversary.

What am talking about? In 1906, the Pure Food and Drug Act placed some restrictions on cocaine and heroin. If that date is not sufficient to some historians, perhaps the passage of the Harrison Narcotics Act in 1914 marks the official beginning of the war on drugs.

"An Act To provide for the registration of, with collectors of internal revenue, and to impose a special tax on all persons who produce, import, manufacture, compound, deal in, dispense, sell, distribute, or give away opium or coca leaves, their salts, derivatives, or preparations, and for other purposes." The courts interpreted this to mean that physicians could prescribe narcotics to patients in the course of normal treatment, but not for the treatment of addiction.

Although technically illegal for purposes of distribution and use, the distribution, sale and use of cocaine was still legal for registered companies and individuals.

The war on drugs in this country continued with the passage of thMarihuana (sic) Tax Act of 1937.

It may be accurate to note that the 1961 UN Convention on Narcotics may have been the first international agreement and is nonetheless important in the overall history of the war on drugs, but declaring it the Genesis for the war on drugs is factually incorrect.

    •  I think that part of the history is well known (0+ / 0-)

and this diary isn't intended to go back over the Dupont, hemp, marihuana act, etc etc etc. Most folks are, however, fairly familiar with the rudimentary details of Prohibition's beginnings in america.

in the future, however, i will be using martin booth's book "cannabis: a history" to do a Unitary Moonbat-style History Of cannabis diary. Been wanting to do it for a couple of years now, but the cops stole that book and I have to find another copy.

      •  Missing the point entirely (0+ / 0-)

If the history is so well known as you claim, how come you arbitrarily used 1961 as the beginning of the drug war?

You should read The Emperor has no clothes, by the late Jack Herer, for an overview of the history of cannabis.

when Nancy Reagan used the overdose death of promising basketball player Len Bias on June 19, 1986 to launch a WAVE OF NATIONAL HYSTERIA over illegal drugs.

When I think of the culminate total of all the thousands of years Americans spent in prison unnecessarily because of Nancy Fucking Reagan, I get furious. That ghoulish old woman is responsible for an enormous amount of human suffering.
