  •  Maybe we should deport everyone (9+ / 0-)

who ever emigrated to this country and give it back to the people we stole it from. How's that work for you?

Maine is more than just a state: it is an ATTITUDE.

By your standards, do you know how many countries there are where you could apply it to?  What about the Mexicans and their ancestors who conquered the Aztecs? Or whomever the Aztecs conquered before them? Or countries in other parts of the world where other tribes and royal dynasties displaced previous rulers? Your argument falls because the US is hardly the only country in the world that "stole" land from other people either through war or conquest.

That being said the US is here now. It has its borders. It has every right to determine who comes in and who doesn't.

      •  Your bitterness is palpable. (5+ / 0-)

I just weep when I see people taking the same attitude toward the United States that one might take to an exclusive, members-only club.

Not to mention the fact that behind a lot of this anti-immigrant sentiment is rank racism. I have seen it, too, from my Latino/Latina friends: "it's OK if I am here, but I don't want any more coming in". I have heard this from Cuban-American friends, and from my friend from Chile, too. I find it really gross.

Humanity has experienced 10,000 years of conquest. This is not a serious discussion point.  Should the Normans evacuate and give England back to the Celtics?  Should descendants of the Moors evacuate Spain?

Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the War Room!

          team in this country.

And the English thought that, but have had to do devolution and are looking at independence in Ireland, independence coming in Scotland and devolution in Wales. I'm not sure Cornwall has spoken in the matter, and are still fighting out the Gaels and the Picts in SW Scotland.  Descendants of the Moors were in fact forced out of Spain at the time of Ferdinand and Isabella, and the few who converted and stayed encountered round after round of the Inquisition because they were never trusted.

More importantly, when the economy was better, there were large colonies of unpapered Irish in the East, as the Celtic Economic Tiger began to slump and I remember a presidential candidate openly calling on them in public meetings, promising unlike all this hostile crap, to help force ICE to regularize their papers situations. It was OK to be irregular if you were Irish in 2008.
