basically no way to immigrate here from Latin America unless very rich.

whether you care to admit it or not, these people are a part of the fabric of the country.  Their kids are citizens and residents, why shouldn't they get resident tuition? And even if not citizens, they were raised here, this is their country, not the country they were born in.

We don't punish children for the sins of the father here in this country.

Also our policies, esp "Operation Gatekeeper" have ended in the number of people dying in my backyard increasing exponentially.....

They are here, they work, they pay taxes, they keep their homes in good order, they are human beings.

Anything or anyone who suggests as you do that we deport all 11 million is fundamentally unserious and has no grasp of the actual issues involved....Including the minor fact that even if the parents are undocumented, the odds are their children are citizens and as such deserve all the perks that come with that.

you want to do something that might slow the flow even more than our crap economy has?  Repeal NAFTA as it's ag provisions are responsible for more undocumented migration than any other single thing period.

Also this used to be a migration not immigration....our enforcement policies have forced people to move here permanently instead of migrating back and forth with the jobs as they used to...Now the odds of being able to get back to their jobs are to small to risk so they stay rather than die in the desert......

I posted it up last night. I have posted links elsewhere here to some new DHS reports which I used to obtain the raw data. The YOIS has been around for a long time, so none of this is really new.

Note also that there are no quotas on any of the IR-1 thru IR-5 categories of family based immigration.

I Just Got A Look At The 2009 Figures

Below are the figures for LPR's granted to both Mexico versus all of Europe over the past nine years.

      By the way

      Repeal NAFTA

Ask Markos Moulitsas Zúñiga about NAFTA, in fact ask any number of Kossacks about NAFTA and so-called 'free trade', I'll be willing to bet the majority won't even engage on the subject of 'free trade' and illegal immigration.

Late for work (i.e. goin' skiing) so I won't be able to respond here.

so people went where they could make money to feed their families.  Do you really think people want to leave their families, their homes and their culture for kicks?

We used to have a temporary worker permit system so that Mexicans could cross back and forth legally.  Bottom line is we have to come up with some kind of sane, fair and equal immigration policy.  Why do
Cubans have different rules than other Latinos?

        •  Consider The 1986 IRCA (0+ / 0-)

Which predated NAFTA by twelve years. Approx 3.2 million people were granted amnesty under IRCA, the majority were from Mexico.

Yes, NAFTA ruined the ejido system, yes NAFTA screwed up Mexico even more than it was already and yes NAFTA can be blamed from some of the illegal immigration from Mexico to the U.S. but the primary reasons for illegal immigration from Mexico to the U.S is the same as it ever was:

1.) Individuals can make more money in the U.S. then they can in Mexico

2.) Mexico is a fucked up and corrupt failed state and largely has been for a long time
