The war on education has nothing to do with unions or how much money teachers make.

The GOP has declared war on education because well-educated, informed people are difficult to keep in fear.

They've declared war on education because well-educated, informed people can spot a lie a mile away.

They've declared war on education because well-educated, informed people know how to think for themselves.

They've declared war on education because well-educated, informed people won't vote for them.

The problem is the Democrats who are in power go along with this for the same reasons. It's easier to control an ignorant, scared populace than it is to govern an intelligent, well-educated, informed society.

The dumbing down of America isn't a myth. It's happening right before our eyes and it's happening intentionally.

I've done work with NASA's Education & Public Outreach and in a meeting where the term 'critical thinking' was being bandied about, I did a mini rant:

Despite what they say, no one really wants us to teach kids how to think critically - how to analyze a statement, position or command and evaluate it against the evidence.  No one wants teenagers - who are already expert bullshit detectors when it comes to things adults say - to be skillful at spotting logical fallacies, propaganda or plain ol' lies.  Not parents, not teachers, not principles, not salesmen, not marketing gurus, not movie-makers, not cops, not politicians, not religious leaders, not any authority figure or person who persuades people for a living!   The dirty secret is the glue that holds together civilization is the absence of critical thinking. If we get more than 20% of Americans to think critically all of today's institutions and organizations will fall into chaos.

Speaking for myself, I like chaos.
