    under such repeated ill will and treatment

    i'm a lawyer, so regularly have to engage with someone in opposition, but the constraint of professional ethics usually keeps it civil;

    if i should have to face the people you did, i'd prepare myself with a commitment to turning the rejections into whatever humor could be found, and fuel for my passion for equity

    once, though, when i was a new lawyer, i represented a mature black man who'd spent most of his life in prison; he was a gentle person who was rearrested for being present when cocaine/coke was being sold, and charged with selling, which he denied;

    we went through a trial by jury, and the police witnesses were enough to convince the panel of his guilt; when we were leaving the courtroom one of the elderly (white) bailiffs made a boorish remark about the defendant, and i felt as if my psyche had been punched; my face started to contort into crying, which i did not want to do, so i used my teeth to keep my bottom lip still, which worked;

    so i learned the literal truth of "keep a stiff upper lip"
