The protesters hung signs on the marble walls and railings with blue painter's masking tape.  This tape is designed to be easily removed without damaging the surface underneath.  Along with chant's of "Whose house?  Our house!", it expressed the movement's respect for the people's property.  Their careful preservation of the Capitol building is a conscious symbolic expression of reverence for the democratic process.

If you can play the cowbell, thank a sheet metal worker.

However, even though the stories about the alleged damage made the news, the tape wasn't a big part of it.  I'm sure though that inside the state, the Blue Tape is probably the big symbol.
