    The power in Libya is mostly centered on an individual and his immediate family.  (Amongst other differences.)  Like you, it all looks like bad choices to me.  And of examples from more-or-less recent history, it reminds me more of the Spanish Civil War than anything else.  Except:  Maybe no one's using Gaddafi as a proxy, though, so that would be limited, too.
