    It's about the institutions they follow.  It's a categorical difference, and in making it you do sound defensive.  I don't think the diarist would assert that religious believers are individually responsible for those historical facts, or deny that religions have never done any good.  

    My view is that the good religions do is derived from their self-assigned role of teaching morality, and to the extent they succeed they are forces for good.  But that success has been decidedly mixed over the millennia, you'd have to admit.  The diarist's hope that other, more direct routes to moral instruction and inspiration might be found is certainly a defensible and understandable one.
