    I have a dear young friend who lives in Murakami-shi, Niigata-ken. Heard nothing from him for the first week following the quakes, then he messaged my sons and I on facebook, of all things!
    Haven't heard anything more since the inititial "I'm OK". Assuming basic services like phone/cable/internet must of still be minimal/non-existent in most of the Northern part of Japan.
    What they are going through is apocryphal.
