"empirical evidence" than you need to go by the rules of empirical based reasoning, one of which is correlation does not equal causation.

    •  The diarist did not ever claim causation (0+ / 0-)

The claims are, "conservatism is bad for _".  These are to be distinguished from "conservatism causes _, and ___ is bad."  Maybe claims of the former form are true; and the correlative evidence the diarist has provided is itself evidence for a causal connection.  It isn't definitive evidence, nor certain evidence, but it's still evidence for causality.

A causal hypothesis ought to specify some kind of causal mechanism, and the data above clearly fall short of this.  But the data above aren't evidentially impotent, even if they're at most correlative.  Smoking was known to be bad for you before it was known to cause cancer.

However, as unscientific as the reasoning presented in this diary is, and as poorly as it made its case logically and statistically, I think we can also both agree that the premise/conclusion is nonetheless true--conservatism IS bad for America. And I'm sure that others HAVE proven it conclusively.

Fact is that no society in the history of the world has thrived or been free for long without a strong central government that actively involves itself in the well-being of the country, but without becoming too overbearing let alone tyrannical. The conservative fear of the latter has been taken to such an extreme that it's created (or, more accurately, been exploited to create) a different but just as insidious form of tyranny, that of special interests.

Of course, modern conservatism is not really conservative, because it uses big government to promote the interests of a few. Described more accurately, modern conservatism is really oligarchy hiding behind a facade of phony conservatism. Not unlike modern liberalism, of course. They're both corrupt.
