I was a reactor operator for 8 years in the Navy onboard an aircraft carrier, which is an A4W plant (a Westinghouse  PWR design).  During my training, I qualified on the S8G plant (a GE PWR design).  There are differences, and I have never qualified on an BWR, so, as your brother states, I can attest to the caveats (heh).

I looked into the civilian side and took a couple of tours of different style plants (after I hurt my ankle pretty badly and left the service), but decided to go back to college.  During my time in college, I was approached by a 'head hunter' to work at a new gas turbine electrical plant (a GE Frame 7FA combined cycle style plant) in California (where I knew no one when I moved).  I accepted the job and am very satisified with my employment.  The job is interesting but not nearly as stressful as working at a nuclear plant.
