  •  You know, "tea and sympathy" (6+ / 0-)

is what conservatives yearn for.  They long to be cossetted and comforted and not have to contest with uppity women.  That Ronald Reagan referred to his Nancy as "mommy" was not accidental.  It encapsulated the conservative males' yearnings for the traditional comforts of hearth and home.  It also explains the resentment they feel for Nancy Pelosi -- a Nancy who's not being nice to them at all.  Not to mention that a "nancy boy" is what they want and don't want to be.  The truth is that "mamma's boys" are defined as such by jealousy and envy.

    •  Ah, conservatives (6+ / 0-)

That Pelosi isn't behaving like whatever their quintessential image of Grandmother and just knitting or something, but instead stands up and fights for the things she believes (not to mention being, you know, one of the most powerful people in the world) is no doubt a source of great discomfort for many.

Sounds like Pelosi's got some "San Francisco values" to me... or something.

But to be serious, normally I wouldn't want to dispute the motives of people, but given the... let's go with "troubled"... relationship that many conservatives have with women (and the idea that they should have terrible things like rights) and their obsession with "traditional" gender roles and marriage, etc. is pretty good evidence that many of them have some deeply disturbing views of women.

I'm inclined to the hypothesis that their insecurity is either endemic or the consequence of what used to be called "difficult births."

I am pretty certain that a grandson's recently diagnosed ADD (characterized by a gross awareness deficit and a persistent misinterpretation of reality) is likely a consequence of perinatal asphyxia which resulted from a botched delivery.  How many children in prior generations suffered permanent brain damage because their heads were too large for the birth canal is anybody's guess.  Some researchers in Britain are working the hypothesis that the premature cutting of the umbilical chord in association with caesarean sections may, inadvertently be causing a deprivation of oxygenated blood to the brain--i.e. a brief perinatal asphyxia whose effects only become apparent as the cognitive areas of the brain develop.

People with little self-awareness make ideal political candidates and figureheads because they are not self-conscious and don't mind making fools of themselves.  Of course, they would resent the notion that they are in some way deficient.  Or, perhaps that accounts for their almost uniform rejection of special education programs -- jealous of something that wasn't provided to them.
