  •  I was stunned to find (19+ / 0-)

that the group as apparently hidden its website. This is a group that is as determined to operate in secrecy as the Scientologists, only unlike them, it wants to negatively impact the lives of most Americans.

I only heard about ALEC a week and a half ago in a passing post in local state blog. I went to their website and started digging around and was absolutely horrified.

We need to start talking loudly about this group every chance we have and give them some of the unwelcome sunshine the Koch Brothers (who are represented on ALEC's "private enterprise board") have been getting in the last couple of months.

The Wisconsin Republican Party's attempt to intimidate Professor Cronon, who wrote in his personal blog about the group, is chilling. So is the ALEC spokeswoman who almost certainly flat-out lied to the MIlwaukee Journal Sentinel in saying the group had had no coordination with Gov. Walker and the Wisconsin legislature over anti-union legislation. Since that is their entire purpose, it's almost certain they did.

for new front groups, because as old ones are exposed and abandoned, new ones will be set up to take their places. Either that, or the old, exposed ones will decide on a strategy of mainstreaming, getting "fair" treatment for themselves by getting their representatives interviewed by traditional media organizations from Fox News to NPR.

      Hi Anastasia,

I was surprised finding their website hidden, too.  That's what prompted me to write the post.  The more I dug, the tougher it got to read more information about the group.

the history professor whose blog post sought to inform people about their activities, I'd say this is a very sensitive nerve for the Republicans.  I hope you and many others will continue to probe and publicize their activities, although the push back and threats may be intense.

They don't want people to know that the radical legislation moving through the state houses here in Wisconsin and in your state of Ohio are identical boilerplate written by and for out of state corporate interests.  Republican legislators, easily influenced by big money donations and flattered by being flown off for some wine-and-dine attention by deep-pocketed ideologues, bring this stuff home and try to ram it through.  None of it is designed to bring jobs or economic stability or a fair playing field to individuals and small businesses within the state-- it's all designed to serve the interests of huge corporations.

Thank you for your efforts to get this story out there.

the secrecy aspect. They are trying to evade lobbying laws by saying what they're doing isn't lobbying. But it's really lobbying on steroids. They don't have to go through the persuasion step. They just hand off the pre-written bills to willing legislators and they dutifully try to get them passed. This should also be subject to disclosure regulations.
