  •  Heh. (10+ / 0-)

I'll bet most of the congregation fell asleep during the boring, scholarly part, then woke up at the end for the librul-bashing.

    •  Yep. Pretty much. (9+ / 0-)

I have been accustomed, in my 25 year career as a sacred musician, to working in "downtown" churches in mainstream Protestantism and Catholicism where the pastors were actual scholars, where the preaching and the theology were good but also liberal, where sermons sounded more like you were sitting in seminary than in "church", and where the majority of the congregation was educated broadly, including in the bible and the doctrines of their denominations. In other words, people who could smell bullshit a mile away.

It is difficult for many non-church folks to understand, but not every Christian is an ignoramus, especially about his or her view on faith and the scriptures. A large and growing majority in this country, though, is. Which is what makes these people so damned dangerous.
