    ...more socially conservative"

This would be an improvement over the Lieberman types and the corporate yuppies who have gotten a free pass to do harm to the middle class over the years due to their toeing the liberal line on certain social issues.  I've always advocated for a progressive-populist alignment based on a liberal economic program, but I've always thought that liberal elitists have shied away from that because they fear it opens up the Democratic Party to more influence from people who are less liberal on non-economic issues.

    •  How? (0+ / 0-)

Antiabortion, antifeminist, and antigay views are preferable to the Liebermans?  I am no Lieberman fan, but I would take him any day over McCain or any of the cultural conservatives.  People who inherently believe others have lesser rights because of their gender or sexuality are no friends of mine.

But I would easily take an anti-war, anti-NAFTA, anti-war, anti-abortion, pro-labor economic populist along the lines of Bart Stupak or David Bonior instead of the perfidious Joes of the world.

We hated Joe was because he acted like a conservative now and then, on critical issues.

It only doesn't matter until your issue is affected.  Remember Jon Tester?  Supported by this site, total populist guy.  Treated like the Anti Christ by Marcos and many denizens here once they found out Tester really was opposed to illegal immigration and was willing to vote his beliefs.

Also, there is a big difference between someone who is pro NAFTA and someone who believes women don't have the right to make reproductive choices.  At least NAFTA is about lowering barriers and giving more choice, no matter what the bad effects.  Being antichoice is about taking away women's control over their body, and I can never respect, much less vote for, any Democrat who would favor that.

He's no friend of Dems.  Yes, he was good recently on DADT--I have no clue as to why--but he's too much of a self-aggrandizer and has screwed Dems over 'way too many times for me to choose him over anybody.

At least W, Rove, & Co. never tried to convince me they were my friend.
