  •  The obsession with Sharia law (11+ / 0-)

I just don't get it.  Who told the right wing wackos that this was some sort of threat?  How do they even know anything about it?  I mean they know so little about anything.  Was this fed to them by Beck?  It just seems like it is coming out of left field.

    I got this from Wikipedia:

the Canon law of the Catholic Church, is a fully developed legal system, with all the necessary elements: courts, lawyers, judges, a fully articulated legal code and principles of legal interpretation.

No one is worrying about it taking over the US legal system.  Don't many religions have their own laws and legal systems?  And there are so few Muslims in the US.  Why would Sharia law, of all religious legal systems, represent such a threat?

      Dunno, that's my best guess.

The bishops conspired to undermine criminal justice in many different cities in the US using canon law. It was used to justify the refusal to turn child-raping priests over to the authorities and try to keep all complaints within the RCC and allow the priests to continue to rape.

The GOP is the party of mammon. They mock what Jesus taught.

    •  Allow me to explain.... (4+ / 0-)

...you will recall that a major tenet of the McCain/Palin campaign was that Obama wasn't American, that he was a muslim, that muslims are all terrorists and that he would secretly allow the terrorists to seize control of our government.

McCain famously moderated this message when asked to confirm it directly, but it was an indirect and constant overtone. The Republicans persist with that message.

If either Sharia law or Canonical law were the law of the land, we would be unhappy, but there is no threat of that occurring. However, the truth doesn't matter here. Only the message matters: A Muslim has taken control over our government and wishes to destroy America. We need to take America back.

      Elect Republicans. That's the message.

British Petroleum: I think that means it's foreign oil.

    •  The only thing I can think of (0+ / 0-)

is that it acts as yet another outlet for racial/xenophobic hatred of scary non-Christian brown people. Apparently having this outlet is so important that they don't bother checking to see if the facts underlying their fears are actually true.

But you're right, it's downright bizarre. Even if Muslims wanted to impose Sharia Law on the United States, it's not like there are anywhere close to enough of them to do so.
