  •  Do not doubt at all that there is an incredibly (6+ / 0-)

strong racial component, that was obvious from the wonderful diary. I was wondering if it was race and class based or purely race-based? Here it is a combination of the two, but in the US, the racist component has a life of its own irrespective of class (it does so here as well, but they are more subtle, it becomes closely tied to class and deliberate creation of an underclass), so I was wondering if that was the case or a combination. I'll check the statistics closer tomorrow as it is 2 am, but I could not resist such an important discussion. Absolutely excellent diary.

I'll check princes6 comments above to find the link to Kozol (looks like I have missed the diary). I'll also check tomorrow if there is anything on the UK on this question and try and put the link up.

I am so glad you like the diaries! It was an amazing demo and there is a lot going on, so I'll try and keep people updated; things are incredibly ugly over here and I am worried how far along this line things will go in the US. I already know several people that lost disability and are now on job seekers allowance and there have been cuts to housing benefits so as to push the poor out of the centre and out towards the outskirts of London (I live in a working class area of east london and my local council needs to cut £65m over 3 years and there will be an influx of people being displaced in the centre, services are being cut as the Tories froze council tax and cut money to local areas).
