  •  Wow. It's because she's not black? (5+ / 0-)

Really? That's what you're going with?

Also, note that she did pour money into this school, as a direct result of what now appears to have been cheating.

    •  That was part of the problem (0+ / 0-)

Fenty caught crap for appointing a Korean because she wasn't black, that caused massive political backlash.  He got a fair bit of flack for appointing people to positions that were not from the correct wards and were not black.

Many of DCs school problems are race based.  A lot of the government is overly bloated because of Barry and hiring people up as hand outs and for supporting him.  A large amount of the black middle class in the city is held up by these government jobs, particularly in the school district.  So any attempt at serious reforms gets plastered as attacking black people and goes nowhere, and don't ever replace an African American with someone who is not, that will land you in hot water.

Most of the blame here is on the hands of Barry who created government jobs as a method of consolidating political power, and we have all paid the price for that since.

In the end Washington DC will have to decided if it wants a proper education system or if teachers are going to continually function as a political power base.  It can't work both ways.  And it took decades for Barry and local political leaders to create this situation, and none of them actually want it undone.

That's a pretty good article on this.

Genetrification being a major issue did not help Rhee or Fenty one bit either.

      •  I'm surprised this isn't recced up... (0+ / 0-)

        you came out and said

Many of DCs school problems are race based.

What is usually said in a different way...oh let is about the home environment, culture, poverty.

I guess many around here arent comfortable going out on the limb and would rather use their coded words to say what you said.

Hats off to you for honesty!

Now, I don't agree with your comment overall but at least you wrote it straight no chaser what others twist themselves in pretzels around here avoiding to do.

        •  are you saying that genetrification is not a issue (0+ / 0-)

if so you've never been here.  It's a massive problem.

The schools are used as a political power base.  Rich white people don't give a crap about it because they can always send their kids off to private school or move them out, it is not a problem to them.  And Barry and other political leaders are more concerned with using the schools as a rewards program for political support and a voting block base because of gentrification than actually solving the problem.

This applies to other common issues here.  But in the end a lot of it boils down to the fact that the affluent people in NW really care about different issues than the people stuck in NE and SE.

It's a not so secret part of the local politics, that for as "liberal" as DC is, white NW and black SE/NE are completely different worlds and the entire politics of the place is a mess.
