  •  If it's for real (none)
I think Rumsfeld and Wolfowitz anticipate a much quicker and easier task than Iraq, and that they will simply move troops from Iraq into Syria.
    •  And we all know how well (none)
their orginal predictions about Iraq turned out. Rationally, I think there's no way they can justify yet ANOTHER war, after horribly mismanaging one that's not even finished yet, but I know rational doesn't mean anything to them.

      •  they're building a case (none)
to say that Syria is "out of step" and is "harboring terrorists" and they will probably tie Syria into the Iraq insurgency somehow as well: if this war of words escalates, I would say the safe money is we're going in.
        •  I will agree with this (none)
There is a pattern here and the Administration is building the case for strikes against Syria. It's also why Syria suddenly handed over Saddam's half brother. They too are aware that the Neocons have Syria on their minds.

But desire may be tough to turn into reality in this case. The fall of Damascus would create a Sunni-Triangle 5 times the size of the current one. And if we were involved in Iran, it would turn numerous Iraqi Shia against us. We can barely control events in Iraq as it is. Add Syria and Iran to the equation and it would simply be beyond all control.

    •  I (none)
I think they might want to do that, but I just can't see it being possible...

Now, maybe they're laying the groundwork for an invasion of Syria a few years from now. You know, when all those bases in Iraq are complete and the military has had some time for recovery. But seriously, to move out of Iraq and further provoke Arab hostilities would undermine any support we might have had in Iraq.

      •  Iraq (none)
        We had support in Iraq?
        •  Well.... (none)
What I'm saying is our hold on Iraq is tenous at best- yes, one segment of the population is in open revolt, but if we aggravated the Shia, the shit would hit the proverbial fan. Because instead of having Sunnis bombing Shiites, we would have Sunnis and Shiites bombing us. Which would erode our support network in Iraq.... which would naturally be the basis for any assualt on Syria.
