The Carlyle Group is one of the largest private equity firms.  It had been very profitable for years, but only wealthy, well-connected people could invest.  Carlyle then created a new investment vehicle open to everyone, i.e., average Joes. It promptly went belly up, leaving the investors looking like sheared sheep. But, the press never have questioned how a savvy bunch of investors could be such losers when serving one clientele and so profitable when serving another.

So is James Baker,  former British Prime Minister John Major and Shafiq bin Laden, Osama bin Laden's estranged brother, who was at Carlyle's annual investor conference while the September 11 attacks were occurring.
