One of the things I notice about German made cars is that there doesn't seem to be a planned obsolescence. I have had 2 BMW 5 series, the first I got rid of after 320k km ( 200 k miles) and the second I am still running with 240k km (150K miles)

The second needed a replacement engine around 200k - but this was apparently due to a previous owner running it on low oil - shit happens. But generally, they are well built, don't rust, and the engines and trannies are good for 200 k miles plus.

The current one is from 98, and there have only been 2 significant model changes since, the most recent last year.

Recent Mercedes's are not old Mercdes's, either.
And, honestly, you are to be congratulated for your good luck with BMW.  The Marque hasn't done well in reliability surveys of late.

In contrast, Ford is comparing nicely with the Japanese makers these days and even GM has experienced a big boos t even if it is a matter of simply dropping a lot of unreliable models.

or the EU. How well are your roads maintained, and what is used in winter for snow clearing?

In the US, roads are deteriorating all over the place -- pothole city -- and far too many places use masses of salt all winter long to encourage melt. That has the dual result of rusting out the bottoms of cars and of causing horrendous environmental problems because it's in the run-off.

but last Winter was a hard one, and the roads are not so hot right now.

Winter dienst uses salt also, but rust treatment is usually giaranteed for 5 to 7 years.
