  •  I'm not in Tosa (9+ / 0-)

I live in West Allis.  I phone banked for Sullivan, Barrett, and Feingold via DFA and my union in 2010.  It would be nice to have Sullivan back.

    •  What is it with that district? Reynolds? Vukmir? (2+ / 0-)

I worked hard to get Sullivan elected in 2006 and felt so good to see nutcase Reynolds out. I did most of my election work in you district that year I canvassed again (though just once, since I was mostly just doing GOTV in solid Dem areas) in your district in 2010. It is not a natural far-right district. It's a centrist swing district, but somehow swings between moderate Dems and far fringe GOPers for WI Senate. I would have thought a moderate like Sullivan would be safe for decades once he was in. All it takes is one bad election cycle to really screw up a state.

Rep - Tony Stakunus.  The district swung, I think, because of mega bucks poured into Vukmirs campaign - including TV ads (the first time I ever saw them in a State Senate campaign).   Another part of the swing was independents staying home - my phone banking told me that they felt Dems and the GOP hadn't shown them a difference - a direct result of the failure of national Dems to use their majorities and the bully pulpit to full advantage.

Lo info Dem leaners stayed home in droves. GOTV, both in your area and in working class and working poor areas on the near south side of Milwaukee where I did most of my doors in 2010, was depressing. I have never had so many people tell me outright that they were uninterested or too busy to bother. The "they're all the same" mentality was huge. Usually GOTV is 80-90% feelgood rev up the voters reminder stuff. In 2010 I felt like I was doing voter persuasion rather than GOTV. Not that people had flipped to the Republicans, but that they needed to be persuaded to vote.
