Until public education takes responsibility for all of its students, then we will continue to see abysmal public education in our country.

I'm with you on this but the system needs to do this. It is a bigger problem than individual students, parents, and teachers.

Public education is no where near abysmal in most places, but it is abysmal in far too many to avoid fixing.

My main objection to the "taking responsibility" gang is that they want this to be done in a high stakes manner than punishes workers in schools that have a high number of students who are struggling to achieve.

School systems need to be funded with enough staff to pick up the slack to assist students in need. It cannot be dumped on teachers that already teach far too many students during an appropriately long school day and year.

It is a losing game to place a teacher in front of 20-30 students and to expect more than crowd control from the teacher.

I honor all teachers.  I ask, what happens to that curious 4 year old who becomes and incurious lump at age 6?

After all, for progressives, taking one for the team is desirable, but all too often at present, we are taking one from the team.

Because the rich can affort private education settings that are staffed in a way that is not crowd control they want to avoid paying taxes to educate "other people's" kids.

The level of complaints that come from people about school taxes are a shame.  In far to many cases people are taxed on the wrong things at the wrong times in the wrong places.

If we had a national education system, with a better curriculum, and fairer levels of funding..............we'd do a lot of good.

until recently. I will always vote against them now until A. all people pay them and people who buy the most expensive new homes don't get abatements and B. for-profit charters and vouchers are banned. I don't pay to line David Brennan's (White Hat failing charter schools) pocket and I don't pay to prop up a school system hurting from a pedophilia scandal.
