attractive is failing, or are confronted with others making a case you find difficult:

    1.  Do research.

    2.  Consider that they may have a solid reason

    3.  Consider where the two intersect, common ground, and appeal to reason and emotion from there

    4.  Consider the approach.  Is it hostile, does it devalue others, is it contradictory, emotionally unsound?

    Etc...

Going down the road of personal attacks and manipulation isn't the right answer.  Never is.

      passion in this regard.

Here is a toast to more effective communication.

Sometimes there is no middle ground between differing views, so in that case I think it is wise to agree to disagree on specific issues and move on to find things that you can agree on in common. Otherwise known as compromise.

Can you cite a case where the common ground I noted in the diary does not apply?

Secondly, that could be part of the problem.  Middle ground is a entirely different thing from common ground.

Our extensive corporate media bias almost always positions things in terms of middle, when the truth is, we need to be building off of common.

Give that some thought.  I very often do.

          there is no common ground.

Clearly some people are beyond reach.

Call those who don't agree with a certain POV torture apologists for supporting the president is so far out there, that there is no common ground to be reached.

These people have to be let go to do their own thing.

I think it's instructive to differentiate between the current meta issues being seen, and the tools I've presented as the general purpose things they are.

Yes, sometimes people are out of reach.  This varies depending on the advocate though, which in and of itself makes it worth not closing the door.  Just because one of us doesn't get it done, doesn't mean others won't too.

The key there is control.  "have to be let go to do their own thing"

Not how I play it.  We don't control them, remember?

Finally, yes.  There are times when there is no common ground, but one look at the common ground elements I presented here, and it's very difficult not to see it that way.

common ground is a pivot, where one element of discussion may fail, another may see resonance...

              not you specifically.

I am sharing how I give things consideration, and my overall strategy for frank, fairly robust conversation.  Sometimes it's productive too, though not always.
