I'm interested and active in food issues. Community gardens, community gardening (there is a difference), local economies, and local government need to be the heart of any progressive renaissance.

We're digging up our back yard and turning it into a Victory Garden for many reasons, but the most important one of them all is that we are doing something. We vote with our mouths every day and Victory Gardening is vehicle for us to put our money where our mouths are.

Your Victory Garden is a symbol, a tangible, delightful manifestation of progressivism. Nurturing, demanding, and beautiful, a garden is a spiritual place that man has felt safe in for millennia. Starting or joining a garden (if you can) is a revolutionary act. It isn't as much about creating something new as it is rejecting our penchant for the all-American lawn- which is a domineering approach to a landscape that provides little, if any, return to the owner besides conforming, blending in, and fading out.

Many of us can garden and I urge those who can to start. I started with a few five gallon pots hosting basil. Now I've got a small ecosystem on my hands that will serve as a hotspot of local gardening activity, either in the form of inspiration or procurement of stock such as root cuttings. Think of it as the antithesis of an arsenal.

      An arsenal of peace.
