  •  I think folks want to see him (4+ / 0-)

extract a pound of flesh first.

    1. Don't tip your hand

    2. Look at the cuts proposed by the R's and say in the next Radio Address or press conference:  "The Rs are want to cut billions in vital programs that hurt the poor and middle class, and are threatening to shut down the government if they don't get their way.  That is incredibly irresponsible..."

    3. Go to the district of a vulnerable Republican and make the same point, as well as, "I urge you to call Congressman/woman X and ask them not to shut down the government...."

    4.  If they still want to be dicks, ONLY THEN do you make a counter offer

But that is not what usually happens.  Now sometime I believe that the President gets blamed for things that are really the fault of The Spineless Coward Wing of the Democratic Party, who are scared shitless of Republicans, Beck, Limbaugh, etc.  But still, I don't think the President should go into negotiations with a specific number.  Again, don't tip you hand.

I have said before that I don't expect the President and Democrats to win every fight, but we want them at least in the ring for a few rounds.

There's no getting around it.  He has some self confidence issues to work out on his own, but he shouldn't be burdening the country with them.

      •  not this again (0+ / 0-)

a black man who actually believed he could be president of the United States, when a white candidate with more money and more political connections was assumed to be far ahead and uncatchable by all the D and R pundits, has self confidence off all measurable scales.

"Politics is like driving. To go backward put it in R. To go forward put it in D."
I support Bob Massie for MA-Sen

He thinks the Republicans are reasonable people who can be reasoned with, rather than fanatics intent on destroying democracy in the United States.

This makes him as dangerous as the Center Party in Weimar Germany, who thought the Nazis were reasonable people who could be reasoned with.

Read pp. 1-7 of Krugman's _The Great Unraveling_ (available from Google Books). NOW.

for the things he believes in: tax cuts for the mega-rich, endless war, continued profits for the private health insurance industry, continued bailouts and no accountability for the financial sector... the list of his accomplishments is impressive.
