suggestion that "America can't be that bad, because so many people want to come here", is simply part of the Right Wing meme of stifling any criticism.

That's not to say that America is bad ... but in terms of living standards for most, is is certainly not top, not even close.

One has to ask "Where are those folk coming from?"

They are not, other than those with family or secure jobs, coming from Western Europe. They are coming from poorer, less developed countries.

It's telling that America is the Land of Opportunity when compared with Mexico, or Guatemala or wherever. That is not a comparison we should be comfortable with.

People with good jobs, close families and a social network do not, as a rule, even leave their localities. Why would they? Leave behind a life, friends, everything they know? Even within a country most folk don't do that, nor do they want to.

So emigrating is a major life change, and a scary one (ask me how I know).

We should not allow ourselves to feel smug, satisfied or confident that we live in a great country simply because others want to come here.

We will live in a great country, when we make it one.

I hope that the quality of debate will improve,
but I fear we will remain Democrats.
