Conservative Republicans are not going to get what they want, and independents are not likely to follow them, since the public wants compromise.
If the Dems compromise, then the Rethugs get what they want, as "compromise" between Dems and Rethugs always means total capitulation to their outrageous demands.

Independents usually just want to be on the winning side, so giving in to the Rethugs yet again is a virtual guarantee that Independents will flock to them yet again.

how can anyone say that "the public wants compromise."  What the public wants is the foolish promise posited by the Miller Lite ads "It's less filling, but tastes great", an impossibility if there ever was one.  The public is a fickle beast that wants less taxes, but not one of those public services cut, unless it is for the "Welfare Queens" (substitute black women) buying Cadillac's with public money.  The real "welfare queens" today, however, are not as obvious since corporate farmers bloated with agricultural subsidies, corporate war profiteers, corporate tax evaders, and health insurers could all fill that role currently.  The "public" wants government that is less filling, but still tastes great, and as any beer drinker can tell you, lite beer always tastes like shit.
