When I ran out of Young Wizards stories, I believe I jumped over to Tamora Pierce's Alanna: The First Adventure, which is another still-running series. My 13-year-old has been working on her Circle of Magic books lately.

her earliest books are earnest but not quite as well constructed as her latest, where she is maturing into one of my favorite authors. The two Circle of Magic quartets are very good for kids of any age who can handle the vocabulary. I love Alanna as an adult, but that's definitely a YA series, not children's, by the time you get to book 2.

Her Trickster's Queen and Trickster's Choice pair are really top notch YA fantasy fiction, a very good coming of age story of Alanna's daughter. (How DO you grow up as the daughter of someone who accomplished so much? :-) )

Fry, don't be a hero! It's not covered by our health plan!
